The law also addresses video displays visible from the driver’s normal position and requires drivers to maintain a proper lookout. Certain exceptions apply, including permitted uses such as GPS and backup-camera displays. Distracted driving in a highway work zone can also constitute reckless driving under the new provisions.

For drivers traveling busy roads around Hamden, Cheshire, Wallingford, and Greater New Haven, it’s another reason to put the phone away and keep your attention on the road.

Tougher Consequences for Passing School Buses

Connecticut is also strengthening consequences for repeat school-bus stopping violations.

Beginning October 1, a third or subsequent violation of the state’s school-bus stopping law will result in a mandatory six-month license suspension. State law generally requires drivers to stop at least 10 feet from a school bus displaying flashing red lights and remain stopped until those lights are turned off. CT.gov

Higher Penalties for Ignoring Travel Restrictions

With winter weather approaching, another change is especially relevant for Connecticut motorists.

The maximum fine for violating a governor-issued travel restriction increases to $250.

Vehicle Equipment Fines Are Increasing

The state is also increasing the fine from $150 to $300 for certain existing motor-vehicle equipment violations, primarily involving mufflers and exhaust systems.

Is It Time to Review Your Connecticut Auto Insurance?

Changing road laws are also a useful reminder to review your auto insurance.

Consider whether your current liability limits, collision and comprehensive coverage, deductibles, household drivers, and umbrella coverage still fit your needs.

Petruzelo Insurance helps drivers throughout Wallingford, North Haven, Meriden, Cheshire, Hamden, New Haven County, and across Connecticut understand their auto insurance options.

Contact Petruzelo Insurance today to review your Connecticut auto insurance coverage and make sure it continues to fit your needs.

Whether you’re commuting through Wallingford, driving the kids to school in North Haven, heading down I-91 from Meriden, or traveling anywhere across New Haven County, Connecticut drivers should be aware of several changes taking effect October 1, 2026.
