What's Covered Under a Commercial Pickup Truck Policy?

If you utilize pickup trucks for your businesses, then it’s important to ensure that you and your employees are protected while behind the wheel. Commercial pickup insurance shares many similarities with personal auto insurance. Like most auto insurance plans, commercial pickup policies encompass 3 types of coverages: liability, physical damage, and uninsured / underinsured motorists. Each coverage type is defined in detail below.

Liability Insurance

Liability insurance is composed of 2 main coverage types: bodily injury and property damage. If the driver of one of your company’s pickup trucks is found to be at fault for an accident, your liability insurance will cover the cost of the other driver’s medical bills (bodily injury) and property damages.

Bodily Injury Covers

  • Emergency care
  • Ambulances
  • Long-term rehabilitation expenses, such as physical or occupational therapy
  • Funeral expenses
  • Pain and suffering

Property Damage Covers…

The cost to repair or replace the other driver’s vehicle. If an employee totals or damages another car with the business pickup truck, then the property damage portion of your policy foots the bill(s).

Physical Damage Insurance

Physical damage insurance encompasses 2 main types of coverages: comprehensive and collision. Whether your pickup truck is crushed by a falling tree (comprehensive), or collides with a mailbox (collision), physical damage insurance comes to your aid.

Comprehensive Covers…

  • Theft: If your pickup truck is stolen, comprehensive helps to pay for the cost of replacement.
  • Weather-related and natural disaster-induced damages: hail, fire, lightning, falling objects (roofs, telephone poles), and hazardous objects in the road.

Collision Covers…

The cost of repairs to your pickup if it collides with another vehicle or object. More than anything else, collision is designed to protect your vehicle. For example, If someone strikes your truck while it’s parked, and then drives away (hit and run), then collision will help with repair expenses.

Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist Insurance

Even though all drivers must carry a minimum of basic liability insurance, many people drive without coverage. If your company’s pickup truck is involved in an accident with someone who is uninsured, or someone who has a policy with inadequate coverage levels, then uninsured / underinsured motorist insurance kicks in to cover what the at-fault driver’s policy lacks.
