Rv Seniors - Husband Navigates

A fire can turn a fun RV getaway into a nightmare. Before you set out on a trip, make sure your RV and your family are prepared. Here are some valuable tips that can help you prevent a fire.

Inspect the RV

A mechanical problem, a loose hose, a fluid leak, or a damaged electrical component can spark a fire. Before you begin your journey, have a qualified mechanic thoroughly inspect your RV and address any issues.

Make sure that your RV has at least one working smoke detector, as well as fire extinguishers in the kitchen and sleeping area. You should also have a fire extinguisher in a compartment on the outside of the RV or in the car or truck that you use to tow it. Check that each fire extinguisher is in good working order. Review how to use a fire extinguisher during a family meeting.

Be Careful While Cooking

When preparing a meal in an RV, the risk of fire can be higher than it is at home. An RV can feel cramped, and the counters can easily get cluttered with people’s belongings.

Keep flammable objects away from the stove. When you’re cooking, encourage other family members to stay out of the kitchen so you can work without distractions. If you use a gas or propane stove, make sure the RV is ventilated. Turn off the gas or propane when you finish cooking.

Use Electricity Safely

If your RV doesn’t have a lot of outlets, you might use a power strip to run small appliances and charge cell phones. Overloading a power strip can start a fire. If necessary, use two or more power strips or take turns charging your phones.

Be Prepared to Deal with a Fire

Discuss what to do in the event of a fire. Emphasize that people should get out of the RV as quickly as possible and should not go back inside for any reason. Make sure that every person who is going on the trip knows where the exits are located. Have children practice opening windows and escaping. Discuss how to find each other if you get separated when evacuating the RV.

Review Your Insurance Coverage
