This week in National Teen Driver Safety Week. A time to focus on the importance of showing new, young drivers the important skills to practice while on the roadway. Not just teaching them the rules, but also mirroring those actions in the way we’re driving too.

From Oct.18-24, 2020 awareness is being raised across the nation for the importance of safe driving skills for Teens.

Here are 3 important rules to consider talking to your teen about as they present the greatest dangers while behind the wheel.

Do Not Drink and Drive

One of the leading causes for death among teen drivers is driving while drunk. It’s important to explain to your teenagers that drinking any alcohol at all should not only be prohibited but if they do, to not get behind the wheel. They’re not only risking their lives but that of their passengers and others on the roadway.

Always Use Your Seat Belt

When it comes to protecting your child from potential injuries on the roadway, nothing compares to requiring that they wear their seat belt at all times. Since many crashes occur unexpectedly it’s important to be prepared for impact and wearing a seatbelt keeps drivers from being ejected from their cars. Always wear yours to demonstrate the right steps every time you get into the car.

Distracted Driving Kills

Driving while distracted is the number one reason for crashes and motor vehicle deaths. Talk to your teen about the importance of turning off their devices and not talking or texting while they drive. Your child should also be aware of all local laws and regulations regarding distracted driving. Be sure they also understand that eating while driving, playing with the radio or GPS controls and even talking with passengers is taking focus away from the roadway and should not be done.
