Most homeowners are aware that energy costs are soaring. But businesses are also feeling the squeeze. Energy bills are becoming an increasing part of the cost of doing business, and many commercial building owners are finding that the increases are eating into the bottom line. While they may not be able to do much about the cost of energy, there are some things building owners can do to reduce the squeeze.

Turn Off Unnecessary Power Sources

While it seems like an obvious step, many companies ignore it, leaving lights on overnight or over weekends. Many employees simply walk away from their computers and printers, leaving them to go into “sleep” mode. While this reduces energy costs, it doesn’t eliminate them. Make a new company policy that lights, computers and other office equipment are to be shut off at the end of the day. Designate an employee to do a circuit around the building each evening to ensure the policy is being observed. Consider installing automatic light sensors in lesser-used parts of the building.

Let the Sunshine In

Natural light is good for us: it not only boosts our vitamin D and helps us absorb calcium, but it’s also good for our moods and energy levels. In addition, it’s a great way to help reduce energy costs. Unblock windows, consider installing skylights, and arrange the office to make the most of natural light.

Install Energy-efficient Lighting

CFL (compact fluorescent) light bulbs are far more energy-efficient than incandescent light bulbs. On average, CFLs use one-third to one-fifth the amount of electrical power of incandescent lighting and can last 8 to 15 times longer. An average CFL bulb providing 800 lumens will use only 13 to 15 watts compared to a similar incandescent bulb which uses 60 watts. Using an energy use calculator, you can determine how much energy replacing incandescent bulbs with CFLs will save you.

Consider an Energy Audit

While many of the steps to lower energy bills are obvious, some aren’t so evident. A professional energy audit can help your business find ways to reduce energy costs and usage that you haven’t thought of. (After all, that’s their business.)  Some utility companies offer free business energy audits to their commercial customers. They can help you determine where you’re using the most energy, so you know where to focus your efforts in reducing usage and increasing efficiency.
